4/57 key-wind Cartel serial no. 20567 - maker unknown - circa 1845
A small key-wind movement in a plain oak, box with a clear serial number stamped into the brass bedplate and the letter 'J' stamped into the comb. Some experts think this is by Junod, but if it is the serial number suggests it was made around 1885/6. Very late for a key-wound plain box with a solid brass bedplate so very unlikely.
The original tune sheet.
Shame someone thought it was a good idea to replace a missing brass pin with sellotape!

As it was when it arrived. The movement didn't run, but I think that was due to dried up lubricant of the wrong type.
Plain Oak case with all original fittings, including the winding key.
The instructions taped inside the flap are no longer required.

The first image below is not of this movement, but of one very similar that was also up for auction. This one has the letter 'G' stamped on the comb.
As usual, there's a lot of cleaning an d polishing to do.
FOr a change, no components damaged or missing. Even the dampers are intact.

Although running OK, it's not perfect. The mainspring is too thick or too short and can't be fully wound, so it won't play a full set of just four tunes. It's now with The Music Box Restorer for a replacement spring and final adjustment.
