A Secol cigarette carousel with a fat barrel 18 note Reuge movement requiring a service and adjustment
First inspection
The movement has had a 'run'. Two missing teeth and about 50% of the pins bent testify to that.
The governor fixing screws were loose which may have contributed to the issue.
The movement was very oily and the oil quite thick. Definitely not clock oil - probably 3in1 or similar.
The doors on the carousel seem to stick a little, as one is slightly out of alignment. I hope to be able to rectify that later.
One base securing screw had been replaced with a larger diameter and two of the plastic fixing tubes have split. I may need to drill the base and use the other three fixing points The incorrect screw will be replaced.

Day 1
All brass components immersed in clock cleaner overnight and then polished.
All steel and cast components immersed in degreaser in a sonic bath then abraded to remove rust and any remaining dirt.
Blued screws cleaned with a brush.

Movement partly reassembled for testing and to aid pin straightening.
With the governor assembly in the correct place and securely screwed down I found that the governor fan vanes would not rotate because they fouled on the spring casing, so I filed the ends down a little to give them clearance. However the cylinder will only rotate about half a turn and then binds. It looks like the drive shaft may be slightly bent, or the bearing is out of alignment. More testing required,

Julie has found an identical box, with the same tune and a movement in good condition, whilst the case is damaged.
So now the plan is to make one good box out of the two. Can you spot the difference?

Second box dismantled and mechanism inspected. Other than dirt and rust, it's perfect.

The movement runs well, but is a little slow.
The effort of opening and closing the doors slows the movement down a lot and it needs a gentle nudge to close the doors and to reach the end of the tune.
I hope to improve that before I send the box back to Julie.
